A Practical Guide to the Southern Highlands’ Smallest Town

 

In the Southern Highlands, most people default to Bowral. It’s larger, more polished, and easier to recognise on a map. Mittagong leans historical. Moss Vale… is fun, fast, and a mini-Sydney.

 

 

With a population of around 2,000, it’s smaller than all of them, but it’s also one of the few places where you can arrive, park the car, and not need it again for the rest of your stay.

 

Everything is actually within walking distance

 

In Robertson, the essentials aren’t spread out.

 

Within a few minutes’ walk, you’ve got:

 

 

It’s enough to cover a full weekend without planning or driving between stops, which is harder to do in the larger Highlands towns.

 

 

Robertson sits on the escarpment and gets significantly more rainfall than the surrounding towns.

 

The result is a landscape that’s consistently greener, cooler, and more densely vegetated. Even in drier periods, it holds its colour.

 

That same climate is why the area is known for dairy and small-scale farming, and why the air tends to feel colder and cleaner—especially in the mornings and late afternoon.

 

 

While the town itself is small, it’s positioned well.

 

Within a short drive you’ll find:

 

Carrington Falls

Belmore Falls

bushwalks and lookout points along the escarpment

 

You can get out, see something substantial, and be back within a couple of hours without turning it into a full-day trip.

 

 

It’s an odd detail, but a real one.

 

The 1995 film Babe was shot in and around Robertson, and the area still carries a bit of that identity. It’s not a tourist draw in itself, but it speaks to the kind of landscape you’re in—working farmland, open space, and a certain visual softness that hasn’t changed much.

 

 

Robertson is small, but it’s complete.

 

You don’t come here for variety, you come here because everything you need is already close, and the rest of the time you’re not trying to fill.
